DISCUSSION FORUM 2

Consider your own country and discuss how Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension scale applies and assess L, M, H for each category. Make your post and respond to someone else's post.

(Country: Pakistan)

I have come across many people in my lifetime who belonged to different nationalities. All of them exhibited different cultural habits, behaviors and traits. I am aware of how much my culture reflects in the way I eat, what I eat, how I dress, how I talk and basically everything that I do in my daily life. We have immense cultural diversity worldwide, and it is hard to understand the cultural differences using a theoretical model; however, Hofstede's Cultural Dimension model is one of the most powerful frameworks used to understand cultural differences. It helps the organizations understand the critical aspects while developing the cross-cultural policies (Shi and Wang, 2011, pp. 96). It differentiates countries based on strong parameters like-

  1. Power distance: According to (Zhang and Begley, 2011, pp. 3601-3617), his category shows up to the extent to which the members with less power from that particular culture accept the power inequalities in their society. With a score of 55, it is hard to specify a preference for Pakistan; hence it is "M."
  2. Individualism: This category shows up to what extent interdependence among the members of that society (Brewer and Venaik, 2011). With a meager score of 14, Pakistan is a collectivist society where people have strong commitment and responsibility in their relationships; hence it is "L."
  3. Masculinity: This category shows how much a society is driven by achievements and success (An and Kim, 2008). Pakistan scores 50, which means it does not prefer this category either, so it is "M."
  4. Uncertainty avoidance: This category shows how much the members of that society feel threatened by uncertainties (Schmitz and Weber, 2014). Here, Pakistan scores 70, which means they have lots of orthodoxies, maintain rigid codes of conduct and hence it is "H."
  5. Long-term orientation: This category shows how society uses their past experiences to deal with their present and future challenges (Venaik et al., 2013, pp. 11-26). Pakistan scores 50 here, which again means they have no preference for this dimension, so it is "M."
