As mentioned by Heekes et al. (2020), corporal punishment in schools is the discomfort of physical pain and other undesired behaviour by a group of students. This research study aims to determine whether the implementation of alternatives to corporal punishment in Malaysian schools can result in better overall development amongst students during current and future timings. The key research questions are as follows:

In the following research proposal, the aim and research questions will be defined to conduct the study in an organised way. Along with this, reviewing the literature will be effective to understand the research phenomena.

Corporal punishment is used to measure the student's behaviour well as through this, and it is possible to analyse the good or bad behaviour of the students. It is noticed that around 2.45 thousand government schools are there in Malaysia (Hirschmann, 2021). 

2. Literature Review 

  • Concept of corporal punishment in schools

From the view of Heekes et al. (2020), Corporal punishment defines the punishment which intends the physical pain of any person or discomfort behaviour in a different environment. These can be in the school, military or for judicial purposes. In schools, corporal punishment is used to improve the students' performance and measure their behaviour. 

  • The negative impact of corporal punishment on students

There are several negative impacts of corporal punishment on students. According to Bassam et al. (2018), corporal punishment is associated with physical discomfort; therefore, it can be harmful to the physics of the students. In this way, with physical discomfort, corporal punishment can influence the mental wellness of humans negatively. 

  • Corporal punishment impacts the personality of the students

Corporal punishment may develop negative personality traits among the students. Punishment from the teachers may cause stress, fear, depression, anxiety and other mental issues among students. 

  • Alternative approaches to measuring the students and their effectiveness

There are several alternative approaches to corporal punishment, which can be used in the schools effectively to measure the performance of the students. From the view of Chambers et al. (2016), Meditation is an effective approach to developing students' concentration towards their education in the school environment. On the contrary, Gökel and Dağlı (2017) have stated that social skill comprises the communication and interaction of people with others by maintaining social rules. Therefore, a social skill instruction programme could be an effective alternative approach to corporal punishment to develop the personality of the students. 

3. Methodology

  • Research philosophy

As mentioned by Kennedy (2017), research philosophy can be defined as a particular way which is followed to gather and analyse the research information. The three majorly used research philosophies are realism, positivism and interpretivism.  For assessing the impact of the corporate punishment on student performance, positivism philosophy is used as it considers the facts and figures thereby increasing the scope of reliability and validity. With positivism philosophy data can be accessed from experiences of natural phenomenon (Žukauskas et al. 2018) thereby enabling the researcher to develop in-depth idea about the benefits and drawbacks of corporate punishment at school.

  • Research approach

Two commonly used research approaches are inductive research approach and deductive research approach. The former develops theory considering collected data, while the latter tests data with existing theories (Zefeiti and Mohamad, 2015). Here, the researcher has framed objectives and explored literature to develop in-depth idea on the impact of corporate punishment on students in schools. Consequently, data would be collected to confirm or disapprove the same with respect to Malaysian school. So, the researcher has opted for deductive approach for offering effective conclusion. 

  • Research design

The major three types of research design are explanatory, exploratory and descriptive research design. Exploratory research is used for topic which has limited information and explanatory research help in understanding cause and effect. Descriptive design is used for elaborative analysis of data for in-depth understanding (Bowen, Rose and Pilkington, 2017). Research have been carried on corporate punishment benefits and drawbacks but the information regarding the impact and effective use of alternative approach in Malaysian schools are limited and thus the researcher can opt for exploratory research design.   

4. Methods

  • Data collection method

Data can be of two types and they are qualitative and quantitative data. The data which can be expressed statistically is called quantitative research and the data which cannot be presented numerically is called qualitative data. In this case, the researcher would opt for both qualitative and quantitative data collected as it aid in comprehensive understanding of the research issue (Zefeiti and Mohamad, 2015). For gathering the qualitative and quantitative data, the researcher has selected action research strategy in enquiry would be conducted on focus groups that form the main aspect of this research (Bradbury, 2015). The data gathered in the process is called primary data as it would be the researcher who would be responsible for gathering the data about the impact of corporate punishment on Malaysian school children.      

  • Sample Population 

Since, the research issue deals with the impact of corporate punishment on Malaysian school students, so they are the main sample frame. The students aged 7-9 years would be selected for carrying out the research and they would be given corporate punishment under strict monitoring to understand the impact it creates on their performance. Purposive sampling would be followed to select 59 students for carrying out the action research in which the active consent would be used. 

  • Data analysis process

The data gathered would basically include the performance details of the students after and before the corporate punishments are applied. So the data would be analysed with the help of different statistical measures like Mean, Mean, and Mode, regression to understand the improvement or the deterioration of the students. Also, themes would be formed to provide in-depth understanding about the impact of the research.  

5. Ethics and risks considerations

The ethical considerations in this research were formed based on:

  • Respect for privacy – this is an important part of any research whereby participants share their thoughts, beliefs and experiences, which would be recorded for further references. If this is shared without their consent, as a researcher, we will be breaching this ethical component. 
  • Informed consent – Regmi et al. (2017) state that informed consent is a process by which enrolled participants are fully educated on the purpose of the study, their roles, a task they will be understood, risk associated (if any) and any other factors before agreeing to be part of the study. This will enable a participant's rights to be protected.      
  • Confidentiality and anonymity – if consent is received not to disclose any information, it is the responsibility of the researcher to respect their participants and not disclose, for example, participant's name, identity, etc.
  • Beneficence – not causing any harm to the participants. Since the study involves action research, there will be a class of students being punished through corporal punishment, which might result in physical and psychological risks.

To mitigate the risk, students will be given the freedom if they would like to be part of the research. If they do not wish to be part of the research, there will not be any penalties, and they are free to leave at any point in time without any consequences. Furthermore, since the research involves students of age 7-9 years, consent will be taken from their parents, the selected school and teachers. As corporal punishment will be used in the research for a group of students, as the researcher this will be closely monitored where teachers do not take advantage of this liberty given and the form of corporal punishment would be those that are less harmful such as pulling the ears, pinching and canning. If at any point in time, it gets out of control, the research will be stopped immediately.   

6. Critical reflective practitioner considerations

Through conducting this particular research study, I have developed my research skill from different aspects. Firstly, I have to submit the research proposal at a specific time; therefore, it has helped me improve my time management skills. Secondly, as the data collection method is primary; therefore, I have to interact with many, which will be effective to develop my communication skill. Along with this, it needs to be mentioned about the empathy skill that can be improved by the researcher through interviewing the participants of this study for collecting the research information. 

The research issue is based on the findings of corporal punishment in schools and their effects on the performance of the students in education. Previously, I did not have a vast knowledge of this particular topic. Apart from this, I have no such experience reviewing the literature based on the research issue. This particular study has helped me by filling this gap, and I feel that in future research, I can conduct literature review more effectively. In this way, this research has helped me to develop my skills and competencies. After that, the methodology section also has helped me to identify and evaluate various research methods and their possibilities. The data analysis process has guided me through the effective ways of proper data analysis channel, which will help me a lot in my future career. In this way, this research has helped me to identify my core skill sets and competencies, which will help me a lot in my future career by improving those areas with ease. So, this work has helped a lot for self-assessment, which will be beneficial for me as this kind of self-assessments has enough potential to improve the core competencies of the person by covering all the possible aspects.
